Multiband Saturator User Guide

This is a guide on how to use the Multiband Saturator plugin – a harmonic saturation plugin with up to six frequency bands.

Add/remove frequency bands and adjust the saturation sound to suit by select from 10 types of saturation and then adjusting the sound using the high pass, low pass, level, mix and output gain knobs. Up to 16X oversampling can be applied to compensate for any aliasing. Each band can be soloed or deactivated. Additionally, the frequency bands can be adjusted in the visual display. The output gain can also be adjusted in the visual display. The A-B functionality can be used to compare and select desired settings. A good selection of presets for drums, vocal, guitar, bass and master are provided as a starting point.

Functionality Overview

  • Remove a band by clicking the ‘X’ icon in the visual display. This will remove the band ahead of the crossover being removed.
  • Add a band in two ways:
    • Move the mouse towards the top of the visual display. A ‘+’ icon will appear which will follow the mouse as it moves right or left. Click the icon to place a frequency crossover at the desired frequency.
    • Right click the visual display at the desired frequency. Click ‘Add crossover’
  • Move a crossover by dragging the crossover to the desired frequency.
  • Adjust the band output gain of a band by dragging the gain line (on the visual display) up or down.
  • Display the input and/or output frequency response by checking the In and/or Out checkboxes. This can be used to visually adjust the saturation and output.
  • Select a band by clicking anywhere inside a band on the visual display. The band will change to green and the associated controls will appear in the green control panel below.
  • Choose one of 10 saturation types using the TYPE drop down menu or by right clicking on the bands gain line in the visual display. The following saturation types can be selected:
    • None – no saturation applied
    • Soft Clip – an arctan soft clip approximation
    • Hard Clip – a hard clipping function
    • Tube – a tube approximation
    • Tape – a cubic algorithm that approximates tape saturation
    • Half Rectify – zeroes the negative half of the signal
    • Full Rectify – makes the negatives positive
    • Chebyshev 2 – a second order polynomial saturation
    • Chebyshev 4 – a fourth order polynomial saturation
    • Chebyshev 6 – a sixth order polynomial saturation
    • Chebyshev 8 – an eighth order polynomial saturation
  • Use the LEVEL knob to adjust the amount of saturation to apply to the wet signal.
  • The amount of dry/wet signal can be adjusted by using the MIX knob.
  • The band output can be adjusted by using the GAIN knob.
  • Use the HIGH PASS and LOW PASS knobs to control the spread of harmonics.
  • Activate/deactivate the band by toggling the switch button (orange) at the top right of each band.
  • Bypass saturation by toggling the ‘B’ button at the top right of each band.
  • Solo a band by clicking on the ‘S’ button at the top right of each band.

Output Controls

Use the ‘BAND|OUTPUT’ toggle to switch control views between BAND and OUTPUT. Global output controls including gain, wet/dry mix and bypass.

Top Menu (Presets and A-B Comparison)

The top menu provides the following functionality:

  • A-B Comparison functionality: Click the A-B button to initiate the comparison. Make changes to the settings and then click the A-B button again to compare with the original. Click the Keep button to keep the preferred version ie. A or B.
  • Preset functionality: Select from the list of factory presets or save your own by clicking the Save Preset button. Click the Delete Preset button to delete a preset.
